Computational analysis of Finnish nonfinite clauses

نویسندگان

چکیده

Abstract Finnish nonfinite clauses constitute a complex grammatical class with seemingly chaotic mix of verbal and nominal properties. Thirteen constructions, their selection, control, thematic role assignment, agreement, embedded subjects, syntactic status were targeted for analysis. An analysis is proposed which derives semantic properties by relying on computational model human information processing. The analyzes constructions as truncated one functional layer above the verb phrase. Research methods from naturalistic cognitive science linguistics are considered potentially useful tools linguistics.

The production of finite and nonfinite complement clauses by children with specific language impairment and their typically developing peers.

The purpose of this study was to explore whether 13 children with specific language impairment (SLI; ages 5;1-8;0 [years;months]) were as proficient as typically developing age- and vocabulary-matched children in the production of finite and nonfinite complement clauses. Preschool children with SLI have marked difficulties with verb-related morphology. However, very little is known about these ...

A Computational Model of Finnish Sentence Structure

A parser based on this model is being implemented as a component of a larger system, namely a natural language data base interface. There it will follow a component of morphological analysis (see JSppinen et al C83); hence, throughout the present paper it is assumed that all relevant morpho logical and lexical information is computationally available for all words in a sentence. Even though we...

The non - omission of nonfinite be ∗

What makes be omissions possible? An obvious candidate answer that has long been entertained is simply this: be is semantically empty, hence a good choice to omit under performance-related pressures (cf. Brown & Fraser 1963). This would make beomission expected in all child languages. What would this hypothesis lead us to expect about the infinitive form of be? In terms of semantic vacuity, non...

Corpus-based Analysis of Parenthetical Reporting Clauses

In this paper, the syntactic properties of parenthetical reporting clauses in Dutch are investigated by means of a small corpus. It is shown that an analysis in which the quote is looked upon as the direct object of the reporting verb is inadequate. Therefore, an alternative analysis is proposed, viz. one in which the quote and the reporting clause are taken to be adjoined. Such an analysis, ho...
